We are an industry leader in employing the latest technology in landfill management systems to avoid adversely affecting the surrounding environment. The aim of the New Zealand Waste Strategy is to minimise waste by reducing, reusing and recycling. It remains a reality, that for some years to come, landfill operations will be required to deal with residual waste.
We currently operate several landfills throughout New Zealand, including one of the country's largest, the North Waikato Landfill at Hampton Downs, aptly named the Hampton Power and Resource Recovery Centre (Hampton PARRC). 100% owned and operated by EnviroWaste, Hampton PARRC services a large part of the upper North Island, including Auckland.
Our landfill services include:
- Site selection
- Planning and design
- Resource consent process management
- Operation
- Leachate treatment
- Remediation and aftercare
- Landfill gas utilisation (gas to electricity)
- Closed landfill management
EnviroWaste has extensive experience in the design, construction and operation of modern landfills and cleanfills, managing the whole process from the initial site selection through to operation and aftercare. If an existing landfill is available to be linked into an integrated waste management system, EnviroWaste can manage the landfill to a Council's specific requirements alongside our resource recovery operations.
EnviroWaste operated landfills hold all the resource consents necessary under New Zealand law and have robust management systems in place to ensure continued compliance. Our environmental policies and systems ensure that we take the utmost care in protecting the environment surrounding our landfill sites.
Landfill Planning and Construction
EnviroWaste has extensive experience in managing the planning phase of modern landfills, including site selection, resource consents, design and engineering. We employ the latest technology including:
- Advanced liner systems
- Leachate collection and disposal systems
- Storm water and sediment treatment systems
- Groundwater protection systems
- Landfill gas reticulation
- Modern engineering standards mean that waste facilities are constructed to have as little impact on the environment as possible
We manage the environmental effects of landfills we construct carefully, with extensive monitoring of both water quality and air quality undertaken regularly. Every EnviroWaste site has an environmental management plan to ensure compliance with our consents under the Resource Management Act (1991).
Landfill Operation and Management
Once we complete the planning and construction phase of a landfill project, our focus shifts to operations. Our management systems have been built over 25 years of experience in landfill operation in both the North and South Islands and are aligned with industry best practice.
Our landfill and cleanfill operations utilise appropriate heavy equipment, including loaders and compactors, meaning the job is done efficiently and our people are kept safe. We also carefully monitor and manage the potential nuisance affects which can arise from landfill operations including odour, dust, noise and vermin. EnviroWaste employs sophisticated monitoring techniques at all of its landfill sites to ensure effects on the surrounding environment are minimised.
Landfill Aftercare and Remediation
The end of the working life of a landfill does not signal the end of its lifecycle, nor the end of the potential impact it may have upon the environment. EnviroWaste provides a full range of landfill aftercare services, ranging from soil and groundwater testing and remediation, through to site rehabilitation and capping.
EnviroWaste routinely conducts monitoring work at both its own landfill facilities and contracted aftercare sites. Monitoring includes tests for:
- Groundwater
- Stormwater runoff
- Leachate collection
- Landfill gas migration
- Flare stack emissions
In addition to this, EnviroWaste has the capacity to deploy specialist staff and equipment for projects involving sampling and analysis at closed or uncontrolled waste disposal sites.
EnviroFill North – Cleanfill Operation
EnviroWaste also operates a specialised cleanfill disposal site, Envirofill North, which is conveniently located within 20 minutes north of central Auckland. Cleanfill is defined as material that when buried, will have no adverse effect on people or the environment. This includes virgin natural material such as clay, soil and rock, and other inert materials such as concrete or brick that are free of the following:
- Combustible, putrescible, degradable, or leachable components
- Hazardous substances
- Products or materials derived from hazardous waste treatment, stabilisation, or disposal practices
- Materials that may present a risk to human or animal health such as medical and veterinary waste, asbestos, or radioactive substances
- Liquid waste
