Cambridge transfer station set to reopen following upgrade
Reopening with longer operating hours, new safety barriers, wood and e-waste recycling, the upgrade of EnviroWaste’s Cambridge transfer station responds to local calls for accessible and easy to use recycling facilities.
“We’ve been hugely encouraged by the strong community support for local waste minimisation and recycling solutions. So we’re pleased to confirm our Cambridge transfer station will soon reopen and we want to thank residents for their patience while we worked on a plan to bring the site up to standard,” says EnviroWaste’s Central Regional Manager Cathryn Taylor.
Located on Matos Segedin Drive, the Cambridge transfer station previously operated three days a week. It closed in the October 2021 lockdown, and remained closed after an internal review identified it needed safety and service improvements.
“Safety and customer service are big drivers for us. We’re now in the process of installing new steel gates and steel guard rails in the general waste area to help prevent potential falls,” she says.
The site is a handy drop off point for a range of recyclable materials – including e-waste and treated and untreated timber.
“When it comes to your unwanted household electronics, we’ll take anything with a plug and there will be a separate bin on site for safe battery disposal. We’ll also be offering wood waste diversion, so you can bring in your separated timber and we’ll make sure it gets a second life.”
While the site dealt with relatively low volumes in the past, EnviroWaste is thinking long term, says Taylor. “We’re investing in regional infrastructure to support future growth. As Cambridge grows, there’s going to be a greater need for sustainably-focused services and facilities. We can help.”
The user pays Cambridge transfer station will accept recycling and general waste, and from there materials will go to a recycling facility or landfill for disposal. Residents will be able to drop off the following recyclable materials:
- Plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5
- Steel and aluminium cans
- Cardboard and paper
- Scrap steel
- E-waste
- Wood waste.
The transfer station will extend its opening hours to 40 hours a week, from Thursday to Monday, giving people more choice about when they time their visit. Says Taylor: “We expect to reopen before the end of the year. We’ll able to confirm the facility’s opening date when we’re nearing the finishing stages of our upgrade work.”
